Rush Into The Holidays Hair-On: Styles For Every Festive Occasion

Many people have a love/hate relationship with the numerous social events that the holidays bring. There are so many occasions where you’re expected to show up, dress up, look great and be photographed — and all that tends to add to the seasonal stress. We’ve listed the possible situations where you’ll be meeting and greeting, seeing and being seen (or all the above) from now until Jan. 2, and some easy-to-achieve hairstyles for each one.

Click the links for tutorials, and remember that with the right products and styling techniques, you can make anything happen.

Office Party

The office party is, quite literally, the time to let your hair down around your co-workers. When you and your work mates only see each other during the daily grind, it’s fun to prove to them that you do know other styles besides the “messy bun.”

Faux-Braided Fringe

Loose waves are punctuated by a face-framing side “braid” — don’t worry, even the most butterfingered braider can fake this pretty plait. Create your beachy waves with Aveda Brilliant Universal Styling Crème, a round brush and hair dryer — or work it through damp hair, braid/ twist, let dry, and shake out. Weave a ribbon or strand of beads through your faux braid to amp up the festivity.

Kids’ Pageant

If your moppets will be performing onstage for the holidays, you’ll need a style that’s casual enough to be at home in an auditorium, yet special enough to make you the envy of the other hundred moms in attendance.

Cascading Ponytail

This luxe special-occasion pony is easy to pull off. Volume is crucial, and Pure Abundance Style-Prep is your go-to for that. Finish with a few drops of Aveda Dry Remedy Moisturizing Oil at the ends, and apply Brilliant Medium Hold Hair Spray to your fingers and then scrunch the ponytail for natural-looking volume and hold.

Black-Tie Gala

Getting seriously glam means one thing: statement hair. When your frock, shoes and accessories are princess-worthy, you require a crown to match. A beautiful updo is always graceful enough to stand up to the most gorgeous of gowns. Scatter sparkly hairpins throughout, or secure an ornamental comb into the base for more wow factor. For all-night hold, remember the three types of product you’ll need to create updos that stay put: prep, style, and spray.

Twisted Chignon

In terms of an approachably elegant look, we love this modern take on the classic chignon. You’ll be shocked at how easy it is to achieve. Keep it tight, as in the model above, or pull the twists apart a little for more volume and a looser feel. (The looser it is, the more hairspray hold you’ll need.)

And look, here’s a version for short hair.

Cocktail Party

High Topknot

No flyaways and a nice thick ponytail is the key to creating Jennifer Lawrence’s effortless bun, and for that you’ll need Aveda Smooth Infusion Style-Prep Smoother and Pure Abundance Volumizing Hair Spray. Tuck a twinkly hair ornament into the base.

Marathon Shopping Session

Most of us will spend at least one day this season on our feet for hours, hitting the shops, trying on clothes and logging waaaay too much time in holiday traffic. You’ll encounter approximately 493 mirrors, and you never know whom you’re going to run into. So you want your confidence high, with a cool style that will stand up to a lot of busy movement.

Double Fishtail

At the end of the day, your feet may be killing you, but your double fishtail will still look cute. A flat iron and a hurricane-hold hairspray, i.e. Aveda Control Force, are the secret ingredients to maintaining this one.

Religious Ceremony

If your holidays find you inside a church, temple or another place of worship, a low-key but stylish approach is most appropriate for the occasion. You want to look like you made an effort, but not like you’re on your way to a night on the town.

Chic & Controlled

Sleek with a side part and inward flip is how Cate Blanchett rolls. Elegant yet understated, it can be achieved with Aveda’s Smooth Infusion Naturally Straight, a round brush, a blow dryer and a flat iron.

All these styles are intended for DIY, but if you need some expert help, book an appointment with a Douglas J stylist for a blowout, updo, or whatever other look you crave! We can help you make your holidays as stress-free (and as lovely) as possible.
