Press Release:

Students Looking for a Rewarding Career Should Consider the Salon and Spa Industry

East Lansing-----High school students who are considering career choices, as well as persons thinking about switching careers, should give careful thought to the rewarding careers that are available in the salon and spa industry, TJ Weaver, Vice President of Education and Co-Owner of the Douglas J Company, said today.  “This is a career path that deserves serious consideration and one that I wholeheartedly endorse,” he said.

Weaver also said that a 2007 national survey on “Job Demand in the Cosmetology Industry” that was conducted by JBL Associates of Bethesda, Maryland, for the National Accrediting Commission of Cosmetology Arts and Sciences resulted in these interesting findings:

  • “The supply of skilled professionals in the industry continues to fall short of the demand.”
  • “This national survey of the cosmetology industry found that 53 percent of salon owners had job openings.”
  • “Salons filled nearly 485,000 open positions in 2006.”
  • “Even with significant levels of hiring, nearly three-quarters of the salons that tried to fill positions were not able to find qualified applicants.”
  • “Future hiring plans are robust and the industry is projected to continue growing.”
  • “The number of salons has increased by 57,256, or 18.3 percent, during the past three years.”

“I am confident that this industry will continue to grow as more individuals with busy lifestyles and high-stress careers seek the pampering and stress-relieving services and treatments that quality salons provide,” Weaver said.

The Douglas J Company prepares hundreds of students each year for careers in this industry at its Douglas J Aveda Institutes, which are located in East Lansing, Grand Rapids, Ann Arbor and Royal Oak.

Since its inception in 1986, the Douglas J Aveda Institute has led the way in innovative training for careers in the Salon/Spa Industry.  “We believe that students learn best in an environment that emulates a true salon setting and that is what we provide in our Institutes,” Weaver said.  “Our students have the opportunity to work with the guests as if they were already a professional in the industry. Not only does this diverse guest interaction enhance the technical skills of our students, they also learn the confidence, self-esteem and professionalism that are vital for their success,” he added.

The Douglas J Aveda Institutes offer day and evening classes to accommodate the demand for flexible schedules.  “This makes it easy for our students to work while they receive their professional education if that is what they wish to do,” Weaver said.

“This is an exciting, rewarding and creative profession in which to train and work.  I am happy to encourage anyone who is considering a career in the Salon/Spa Industry to pursue that dream,” he added.
