Receives Award
From Grand Rapids Historic Preservation Commission
GRAND RAPIDS-----The Douglas J Company received
an Outstanding Historic Preservation Project Award
for 2007 from the city’s Historic Preservation
Commission on Tuesday, May 15, for the work that
it did in restoring the building where its new Douglas
J Aveda Institute is located at 138 Commerce Avenue
SW in downtown Grand Rapids. Grand Rapids Mayor
George Heartwell presented the award to Scott Weaver,
President and Co-Owner of Douglas J, at the City
Commission meeting at City Hall.
The award states:
The Grand Rapids Historic Preservation Commission
recognizes Douglas J Aveda Institute for their dedication
to the restoration of 138 Commerce Avenue SW and
awards to them an Outstanding Historic Preservation
Project Award for 2007.
“The Douglas J Company is honored and pleased
to receive this prestigious award, which recognizes
our commitment to historic preservation,”
Weaver said. “We worked with the city of Grand
Rapids to turn an old, decrepit structure into the
real downtown jewel that the Douglas J Aveda Institute
is today and I want to thank the city for its help
in the project.” The Institute opened in February
of 2007,
The Douglas J Company invested approximately $3.5
million to purchase and restore the former old post
office building and transform it into the beautiful
Douglas J Aveda Institute. The Grand Rapids Downtown
Development Authority awarded the company a $50,000
grant for the project. “We took every step
necessary to make the building environmentally friendly,
beautiful and a real asset to the community,”
Weaver said. “The Douglas J Company has always
stood for excellence in education, services and
products and our Grand Rapids Institute continues
that tradition.”
Weaver also said the Grand Rapids Douglas J Aveda
Institute will host the company’s annual Natural
Talent Runway Competition on Sunday, May 20. The
contest gives talented young people an opportunity
to demonstrate their skills and compete for scholarship
prizes.
For more than 20 years, the Douglas J Aveda Institute
has been committed to providing a well-rounded education
to aspiring professionals in the Salon/Spa Industry.
Weaver said that students who receive their education
and training at the new Douglas J Aveda Institute
will have a solid foundation from which to go on

The Institute includes classrooms for students,
consultation rooms, a large area for providing services
to guests, and a retail area where reservations
may be made and gift cards and Aveda products may
be purchased. In addition, there is a patio on the
Commerce Avenue side of the building where Institute
students, employees and patrons can sit and relax
or have lunch.
The Douglas J Aveda Institute is open Monday for
retail only from 9 am to 5 pm. Other Institute hours
are Monday, 5 pm to 10 pm; Tuesday to Friday, 9
am to 10 pm; and Saturday, 9 am to 4:30 pm. Guests
may choose from services that include hair cuts,
styling and color; skin care; nail therapy; and

In addition to the new Institute in Grand Rapids,
Douglas J also has Aveda Institutes in East Lansing
and Ann Arbor, and another is scheduled to open
in Royal Oak early next year.
