Guidelines for Entry

  • Essay -On another sheet of paper, tell us how becoming a stylist will benefit the salon and spa industry as a whole.  Also include, as somebody just entering the business, what you consider to be today’s greatest beauty issues and challenges?  Please limit your essay to 300 words. Pay special attention to the details, as grammar counts.  As well as being used to determine finalists, essays will compose one third of finalist’s total scores.
  • Letter of Recommendation - Have a member of the salon and spa industry write a letter of recommendation indicating how you, as a stylist, will benefit the salon and spa industry as a whole. For example, your letter could come from a salon owner, stylist, esthetician or educator.  Recommendations may not be written by family members. Please make sure to include the contact information of the person writing your letter of recommendation. 
  • Proof of Eligibility - Please include a copy of your high school diploma, GED, or current transcripts showing senior class standing.

Entry Submission:
Submit your completed application and entry to Douglas J Aveda Institute no later than May 9, 2008. Mail or fax all applications and related materials to:

Finalist Selection:

  • Finalist selection will be based on applicants’ essays and letters of recommendation.
  • Finalist notification letters will be mailed no later than Friday, May 16, 2008.

Contest Details:

  • Finalists selected will compete in styling an evening look of hair, makeup and clothing on their model during the runway competition.  Model preparation will take place at the Royal Oak Institute. The runway portion of the competition will take place at the Royal Oak Music Theatre.
  • Finalists will be responsible for providing their own model, clothing, and accessories (models must be at least 16 years of age and may not be licensed in or attending school for cosmetology or a related field).
  • Finalists will be responsible for any lodging/transportation needed to be present at the competition.
Winner Selection:
  • The judging panel will be comprised of stylists, salon owners and other industry professionals.
  • Finalists will be scored on their application essay, model transformation and overall model look to determine winners.  Each category will count for 1/3 of the finalist’s total score.
  • All winners will be selected on merit.  Douglas J will not discriminate on the basis of color, creed, sex, age or any other characteristics protected by law.

Applicant Requirements:

  • Applicants must have a high school diploma or GED, or be graduating from High School in the year 2008-prior to chosen enrollment date, be at least 17 years old and not enrolled in another school offering similar course of study.
  • Applicants may not have prior professional training in the Cosmetology field.
  • Employees of Douglas J Aveda Institute(s) and their family members are not eligible to participate.

Scholarship Details:

  • Up to $100,000.00 in scholarships will be awarded in different increments with grand prize(s) of a full tuition scholarship to any of the Douglas J Aveda Institutes.
  • The cosmetology tuition scholarships awarded may be applied to any cosmetology course at any Douglas J Aveda Institute starting between June 8, 2008 and June 8, 2009.
  • Scholarship winners must complete admissions requirements for Douglas J Aveda Institute.
  • Scholarship is null and void if program is not completed.
  • Scholarship cannot be used in conjunction with other Douglas J scholarships.
