Guidelines for Entry
Applicants must submit all of the following items to Douglas J:

  • Essay - On another sheet of paper, please answer the following questions: How you are inspired by the salon industry and how will your inspiration make you a successful stylist?  Also, as a successful stylist, how will you make a positive impact on the environment?  Please limit your essay to one double spaced typed page. Pay special attention to the details, as grammar counts. 
  • Letter of Recommendation - Have a member of the salon and spa industry write a letter of recommendation indicating how you, as a stylist, will benefit the salon and spa industry as a whole.  Your letter can come from a salon owner, stylist, esthetician or educator.  Recommendations may not be written by family members.  Please include the contact information of the person writing your letter of recommendation. 
  • Proof of Eligibility - Please include a copy of your high school diploma, GED, or current transcripts showing senior class standing.

Submit your completed application and entry requirements to Douglas J Aveda Institute no later than January 23, 2009. Mail or fax all applications and related materials to:

Finalist Selection:

  • Finalist selection will be based on applicants’ submitted application and related materials.
  • Finalist notification letters will be mailed no later than January 30, 2009.

Contest Details:

  • Finalists selected will compete in styling an evening look of hair, makeup and clothing on their model for a runway competition.  Model preparation will take place at the East Lansing Institute. The runway portion of the competition will take place at the Small Planet.
  • Finalists will be responsible for providing their own model, clothing, and accessories (models must be at least 16 years of age and may not be licensed in or attending school for cosmetology or a related field).
  • Finalists will be responsible for any lodging/transportation needed to be present at the competition. Douglas J will provide transportation from the East Lansing Institute to the Small Planet and back.

Winner Selection:

  • Winners will be chosen by a panel of judges who work in the styling and salon industry.
  • Finalists will be scored on model transformation, overall model look and technical merit to determine winners.  Each category will count for 1/3 of the finalist’s total score. In the case of a tie, the finalists’ essay scores will be factored in.
  • All winners will be selected on merit.  Douglas J will not discriminate on the basis of race, color, creed, sex, age or any other characteristics protected by law.

Applicant Requirements:

  • Applicants must have a high school diploma or GED, or be graduating from High School in the year 2008-prior to chosen enrollment date, be at least 17 years old and not enrolled in another school offering similar course of study.
  • Applicants may not have prior professional training in the Cosmetology field.
  • Employees of Douglas J Aveda Institute(s) and their family members are not eligible to participate.

Scholarship Details:

  • Scholarships will be awarded in different increments with the grand prize being a full tuition scholarship to any of the Douglas J Aveda Institutes.
  • The cosmetology tuition scholarships awarded may be applied to any cosmetology course at any Douglas J Aveda Institute starting between February 22, 2009 and February 22, 2010. Other conditions or restrictions may apply.  
  • Scholarship winners must complete admissions requirements for Douglas J Aveda Institute.
  • Scholarship is null and void if program is not completed.
  • Scholarship cannot be used in conjunction with other Douglas J scholarships.
